Business Cultures: Thailand
Key Cultural Traits in Business
Kreng jai means being reluctant to impose on others, refuse requests, or express negative opinions directly. Thai counterparts may say 'yes' when they mean 'possibly' or 'we will consider it' when they mean 'no'. Never interpret agreement as commitment without following up in writing with specific timelines.
Maintaining face — both giving face to others and not losing face yourself — is fundamental. Never criticise a Thai counterpart or their product/service publicly or in front of others. If problems arise, address them privately and gently. Meetings are for building consensus and relationship, rarely for hard negotiation.
Thai business is deeply hierarchical. The senior person in the room is the decision-maker, but may say little during the meeting. Presentations should be addressed to the most senior person. Bring senior representation from your side to signal respect and seriousness. Business cards are exchanged formally — present and receive with both hands.
Thai procurement decisions take time. Pushing for faster decisions is counterproductive. Building the relationship — meeting regularly, attending Thai medical conferences, hosting Thai visitors in Istanbul — is as important as the commercial proposal. Initial meetings are for relationship establishment, not closing deals.
Thailand is called 'the land of smiles' — a smile is used in many situations, including to defuse tension or acknowledge an uncomfortable situation. Do not mistake a smile for agreement or satisfaction; read the full context.
Regulatory & Market Access Overview
Medical devices are regulated by FDA Thailand (Thai FDA — Division of Medical Devices) under the Medical Device Act B.E. 2551. A 3-class risk system applies. CE Mark (EU MDR) or ISO 13485 certification is the primary quality evidence accepted. A licensed Thai importer (Thai Establishment License holder) is mandatory. Class III devices require full technical dossier review. Registration takes 6–18 months for Class II/III. Thailand participates in ASEAN AMDD harmonisation. FDA Thailand is building toward ASEAN regulatory convergence under the ASEAN Medical Device Directive framework.
Procurement Culture & Key Channels
Thai healthcare procurement operates at two levels: government (NHSO — National Health Security Office, MoPH ministry hospitals) and private (Bangkok Dusit Medical Services/BDMS, Bumrungrad, Bangkok Hospital Group, Samitivej). NHSO runs the Universal Coverage Scheme (UCS) procurement — structured tenders for government hospitals. Private hospital procurement is more commercial — BDMS and Bangkok Hospital Group have centralised procurement offices for their 40+ hospitals each. Medical Expo Bangkok and HOSMAT are the major domestic trade exhibitions.
Practical Tips for Turkish Medical Exporters
- Always bring a Thai-language company profile and product brochure — Thai counterparts appreciate the effort even when English is used in meetings
- Appoint a Thai importer/distributor early — FDA Thailand registration cannot proceed without a licensed Thai establishment as importer
- NHSO government procurement tenders are published on the GovSpending portal — monitor actively for category opportunities
- BDMS and Bangkok Hospital Group have procurement offices that receive product demonstrations — arrange through your Thai distributor contact
- Never cancel a scheduled meeting without advance notice — in Thai culture, cancellation is considered disrespectful unless genuinely unavoidable
- Festival and holiday awareness: Songkran (Thai New Year, mid-April) and Loy Krathong periods see reduced business activity — avoid major deadline requests during these times
- Pricing strategy: Thailand's private hospital sector prices quality very highly — do not position premium Turkish products at budget price points; Bumrungrad patients pay international rates
- ASEAN AMDD leverage: FDA Thailand registration contributes to ASEAN harmonisation — a Bangkok-based distributor may extend your product across Malaysia, Vietnam, and Indonesia from the same relationship
